    The term “disaster recovery” comprises a set of policies, procedures, and hardware and software tools that work together to ensure the availability of corporate information technology systems and services in accordance with pre-planned guidelines and the requirements of the business.

  • 2. Why is a company’s IT disaster recovery plan (DRP) so important?

    Disaster recovery is not just important, it is vital, because it allows a company’s applications and services to continue to operate within established RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective) guidelines. In the event of an IT service outage and/or full (or partial) data loss, a well-designed DRP will help the company to recover gracefully from various disaster scenarios.

    In a word, everything! A good disaster recovery plan will copy and store not just all your databases and files, but your entire infrastructure, including PC and server application settings, operating system configurations, bookmarks, and registry data.

Thus, RTO is the established target time for recovery of IT functions after a disaster, while RPO is the amount of acceptable IT downtime during a disaster.
